In the spring of 2022, concern grew for Jeffrey Michael Taurianen, a 33-year-old U.S. Army veteran from Pennsylvania. His last contact was on April 15, 2022, and he was reported missing the following day. There is some inconsistency in public records regarding his last known location; while the national missing persons database lists him as missing from Clearfield, Pennsylvania, other reports state he disappeared from his home on Grasshopper Road in New Paris, Bedford County. At the time he went missing, Jeffrey was described as a Black male, standing 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing between 110 and 120 pounds. He had brown eyes, a shaved head, and a beard. Distinctive tattoos, including a guitar on his right arm and an unknown symbol on his right shoulder, were noted as identifying features.
The circumstances surrounding Jeffrey's disappearance are complex and troubling.
He reportedly left his residence at an unknown time and in an unknown direction, with no description of his clothing available to investigators at the time. Before he vanished, it is believed he destroyed all of his electronic devices, making him incredibly difficult to trace. Family members expressed concern about a medical condition, hyperthyroidism, which if left untreated could cause him to become disoriented and confused. In addition to his physical health concerns, state police were informed that Jeffrey, who served in the special forces, struggles with manic depression and PTSD and had allegedly expressed suicidal tendencies in the past. In the time leading up to his disappearance, he reportedly made nonsensical phone calls to past employers using spoof numbers.
The investigation into Jeffrey Taurianen's whereabouts was opened by the Pennsylvania State Police. Authorities were given several possible destinations where he might have traveled, including Altoona, Johnstown, Clearfield, or Pittsburgh. The case is particularly challenging due to the combination of Jeffrey's health issues and his background. It has been suggested that his skills in technology and his military training could be used to intentionally avoid being found. The lack of a clear starting point for a search, coupled with the destruction of his electronics and his vulnerable mental state, created a difficult situation for law enforcement and a painful one for those who know him.
