In the vast and unforgiving landscape of Alaska, the disappearance of 27-year-old Jeremy Davis in the summer of 2022 left a community in deep sorrow. On the evening of July 17th, Jeremy, a male of American Indian or Alaska Native descent, and another man embarked on a journey across the expansive Iliamna Lake in a skiff. They were traveling from Igiugig to Newhalen, a trip that should have been routine but turned into a heart-wrenching tragedy. A concerned resident of Igiugig alerted the Alaska State Troopers around 9 p.m., noting that the men had set off under circumstances that seemed amiss, especially with an impending storm. An hour later, the troopers were informed that the skiff had not reached its destination. Jeremy was last seen wearing neon green fishing waders, a detail that would later become a focal point in the search efforts. The initial hours of the search were severely hampered by the very storm that the concerned citizen had feared. Strong winds and poor visibility made it impossible for troopers to begin their search on Sunday evening. It wasn't until the following day, Monday, that a local air taxi discovered the empty skiff washed ashore. Troopers were then able to make contact with the man who had been with Jeremy. He recounted a harrowing story, stating that a large wave, generated by the storm, had violently swept Jeremy overboard while they were far from the shore. This devastating account triggered an extensive search and rescue operation, with hopes of finding Jeremy still alive in the frigid waters of Iliamna Lake. A significant multi-agency search was launched in the days that followed. The Alaska State Troopers and Alaska Wildlife Troopers were joined by the United States Coast Guard, the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center, the Civil Air Patrol, and members of the Igiugig and Iliamna communities. Together, they scoured the northern, western, and southern shores and waters of the vast lake, from Newhalen to Kokhanok, leaving no stone unturned. Despite these exhaustive efforts, there was no sign of Jeremy. After a week of intensive searching with no new leads or information, the active search was officially transitioned to a reactive one. This meant that while the case would remain open, large-scale search operations would only resume if new evidence or information came to light. The disappearance of Jeremy Davis serves as a somber reminder of the power and unpredictability of nature in the Alaskan wilderness, and the profound impact such events have on close-knit communities. The investigation remains open, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.
