On August 27, 2022, Steve Keel, a 61-year-old man from Dover, Tennessee, vanished while on a caribou hunting trip in the remote, northern region of Deadhorse, Alaska. An experienced outdoorsman and Marine veteran, Steve had traveled to Alaska with a friend for what was their first hunting expedition in the state, after many trips together over the previous decade. They established their camp near mile marker 349 on the Dalton Highway. On the day he was last seen, Steve left the campsite to retrieve a pack of caribou meat he had left on the tundra about a half-mile away, telling his friend he would be right back. He was wearing camouflage pants, a camo long-sleeved t-shirt, and a camo Boonie hat. When he did not return, his hunting partner grew concerned, and after a day passed with no sign of Steve, he knew something was wrong. The initial response to Steve's disappearance involved extensive search and rescue operations. His two adult sons, both skilled in outdoor survival, traveled to Alaska to join the search alongside his hunting partner. Authorities mounted a significant effort, spending over $200,000 on helicopter equipment and fuel to aid in the aerial search. These efforts were hampered by the fact that Steve was wearing camouflage, making him difficult to spot from the air. The remote location also presented challenges, as there was no cell phone service available. Despite the exhaustive ground and air searches by official agencies and volunteers, which included the use of multiple aircraft, no trace of Steve was found. His backpack and walking poles were eventually located, but these findings did not lead to his whereabouts. In the months and years that followed, the search for Steve Keel continued, driven by his family's determination to bring him home. His wife, Liz, initially offered a $15,000 reward, which was later withdrawn to help fund the ongoing efforts of several search groups. Various volunteer-led searches have been organized, with some individuals forming a deep connection to the case. One volunteer discovered boot prints and two caribou antlers arranged in the shape of an arrow, which led to a more focused search in that two-square-mile area. In September 2023, there was a brief moment of hope when a search team reported finding what they believed to be human remains in a lake; however, Alaska State Troopers later confirmed that the remains were not human. The case of Steve Keel's disappearance remains an unresolved and sorrowful mystery, a stark reminder of the unforgiving nature of the Alaskan wilderness. Despite the passage of time and the immense challenges, his family and a dedicated community of volunteers have not given up hope of finding answers.
