Thomas Robert Dixon, 41 years old, was last seen on October 15, 1974, in Johnson County, Kansas. On the morning of his disappearance, Dixon was scheduled to meet with an associate at a salvage yard in Independence, Missouri, to collect some junked cars, but he failed to attend the meeting. Instead, he was seen entering the office of Gary Simmons, a businessman, in Overland Park, Kansas.
After a private conversation, Simmons authorized a $30,000 check to Dixon, claiming it was for a horse purchase. Dixon cashed the check later that day, but neither he nor Simmons were seen alive again.
The following day, October 16, 1974, Dixon made contact with a friend from a truck stop, reporting issues with his vehicle and borrowing the friend's truck. He later returned the truck and was dropped off at another truck stop, claiming he had secured a new job as a cross-country driver. He called his wife that afternoon, stating he would be heading to Arkansas, but he never returned home.
Dixon's abandoned truck was later discovered at a truck stop, with the keys left inside. Over six months later, in April 1975, Simmons' car was found submerged in the Missouri River. It wasn't until 1991 that Simmons' remains were discovered in a cave in Missouri, revealing he had been shot in the head. Despite the link between the two men's disappearances, Dixon was never found, and his case remains unsolved with foul play suspected.
