On November 9, 1996, a day that began with a routine visit, turned into an enduring mystery for a family from Newfoundland and Labrador. Four-year-old Mitchell O'Brien, along with his older brothers, 14-year-old Adam and 11-year-old Trevor, were picked up from their mother's home in Mount Pearl by their non-custodial father, Gary O'Brien. That evening, their mother, Diana Boland, received a devastating phone call from her ex-husband. Gary O'Brien stated that he would not be bringing their sons back and warned that his home in the nearby town of Torbay was rigged with explosives that would detonate if anyone attempted to enter. When she asked to speak with her children, he simply said "later" and hung up. Law enforcement who responded to the home discovered a terrifying scene; two 400-pound propane tanks had been set up to cause a massive explosion, one powerful enough to destroy the house and endanger the surrounding neighborhood.

The disappearance of the three brothers immediately sparked a massive investigation that extended across Canada and drew international attention. Their father, Gary O'Brien, who had a history of psychiatric issues, became the subject of an international manhunt, with a warrant issued for his arrest by Interpol for kidnapping and attempted murder. Almost a year after the boys vanished, a significant piece of evidence surfaced when the engine assembly from Gary's 1989 Ford Tempo was discovered in the Atlantic Ocean near Flatrock, approximately ten kilometres from Torbay. However, no bodies were ever recovered from the location. The boys' mother has always maintained a strong belief that this was a calculated deception on Gary's part, a deliberate move to make investigators believe they had perished in the ocean and abandon the search.

Over the years, thousands of tips have been received from across North America, but none have led to the whereabouts of the brothers. One of the most credible leads emerged in 1998 when an anonymous woman from Thunder Bay, Ontario, contacted authorities. She claimed to have babysat for the family and provided intimate details, including one of the boys' private nicknames, lending her story significant weight. Despite extensive efforts, police were never able to identify or locate the woman to follow up on this promising information. Through decades of uncertainty, Diana Boland has never stopped searching for her sons and holds onto the hope that they are alive. She has theorized that Gary might have taken them to an isolated religious commune, cut off from the outside world, which would explain why the boys have never made contact. The case of Adam, Trevor, and Mitchell O'Brien remains an active and open investigation, an agonizing story of a parental abduction that resulted in three young boys vanishing without a trace. Despite age-progressed images being released and a $50,000 reward being offered, the fate and location of the O'Brien brothers and their father remain one of Canada's most troubling unsolved mysteries.
