On the morning of April 30, 2014, in the quiet suburban community of Brossard in Longueuil, Québec, 42-year-old Jian Ping Li was at home with her infant son, six-month-old Xiao Feng Lu. Her husband, Hong Hui Lu, saw his wife and child for the last time around 9:40 a.m. as he departed for the day. When he returned to their house on Sabourin Crescent that afternoon at approximately 2:30 p.m., the home was empty and silent. He discovered his wife and baby were gone, and the back door to their residence was unlocked. A sense of unease settled in as it became clear this was not a planned outing. Jian Ping Li's car was still parked at the house, and inside, she had left behind her purse, wallet, money, and cell phone. Disturbingly, all of the baby's essential items, including the diaper bag, the stroller, and the car seat, had also been left behind.

The Longueuil police service immediately launched a comprehensive investigation into the baffling disappearance of the mother and her young son. The initial hours and days saw authorities checking local hospitals, hotels, and transportation services, hoping for a simple explanation that never came. As the search intensified, it expanded to include extensive ground, air, and water searches with K9 units and helicopters, but no trace of the pair was found. Investigators set up command posts on multiple occasions, including on the one-year anniversary of their disappearance, appealing to the public for any information that might shed light on the case. The family's home and backyard were thoroughly searched and even excavated, yet these efforts yielded no clues. The investigation drew in multiple agencies, including the RCMP and Interpol, given that Jian Ping Li held a Chinese passport. A reward for information, eventually raised to $20,000, was offered in the hope of generating new leads.

Years after they vanished, the case remains shrouded in mystery. In January 2017, police, acting on new information, renewed their investigative efforts and brought in a specialized canine unit to search the family home once again. Jian Ping Li's family, who traveled from China to aid in the search, revealed that she had been experiencing marital problems before she went missing. Her brother, a police detective in China, expressed his grave concern that his sister and nephew may have been the victims of a violent crime. Despite numerous tips, hundreds of interviews, and exhaustive searches of parks and waterways, authorities have been unable to find any solid evidence explaining what happened to Jian Ping Li and Xiao Feng Lu. The case is a deeply unsettling one, marked by the unusual circumstances of a mother and her baby disappearing from their home in the middle of the day, leaving behind every essential item and seemingly vanishing without a trace.
