Summary based on 1 source
In the autumn of 1993, 14-year-old Shawn Steven Lee Jones and his 15-year-old cousin, Leslie Jones, were living together with Shawn's family on the Neyaashiinigmiing First Nation, also known as Cape Croker, in Ontario. Concerns had arisen as neither of the boys were attending school, and Shawn's mother was facing potential issues with Children's Aid. On the evening of October 22, 1993, Shawn was given money by his mother for a high school dance in the nearby community of Lion's Head. The following morning, both Shawn and Leslie were gone, along with his grandmother's car and $500 that had been intended for Shawn's hockey registration. The stolen vehicle was later discovered crashed in Lion's Head, and there were indications that the driver may have been injured. This marked the beginning of a long and heart-wrenching mystery for their families and community.

Following the car crash, the two boys reportedly hitchhiked from Cape Croker to Wiarton, where they were dropped off in the downtown area. Around October 26, it is believed they were chased by police from a house in Wiarton, managing to evade them by escaping out the back. The last confirmed sightings of Shawn and his cousin occurred between October 26 and October 28, 1993, in Owen Sound, Ontario. Shawn was seen on Berford Street in front of the Pacific Hotel, while Leslie was spotted on 9th East Street in front of a Tim Hortons. At the time of his disappearance, Shawn was described as a First Nations male with a light complexion, brown shoulder-length hair, and blue/green eyes. He was known to smoke "Player's Light" cigarettes.

Over the years, several unconfirmed sightings of the boys were reported, including some from as far away as British Columbia. There was also a potential sighting of Leslie in Toronto during the late summer of 1996. Rumors circulated that the cousins may have been breaking into cottages in the area. Shawn's mother, Lynette, spent two years tirelessly searching the streets of Toronto and even traveled to Winnipeg in her desperate search for the boys. The disappearance took a heavy toll on the family, with Shawn's brother tragically taking his own life in 2010. Despite the passage of time and the lack of concrete answers, the case remains open. Both law enforcement and the boys' families have expressed doubts that they could have remained off the radar for so long without any contact, leading to the painful belief that they may no longer be alive. The enduring mystery of what happened to Shawn and Leslie Jones continues to cast a long shadow, leaving their loved ones with unanswered questions and a profound sense of loss.
