In the late summer of 2023, the community of Aiken, South Carolina, was marked by the unsettling disappearance of 59-year-old David Mitchell Kantner. A white male, standing at 5 feet 11 inches and weighing around 180 pounds, with brown eyes and short, graying hair, Kantner was a familiar face to some in the area. His life took a turn that would leave his family and local law enforcement searching for answers after he was last seen on Saturday, August 12, 2023. On that day, Kantner was released from the Aiken County Detention Center at approximately 11:30 a.m.. He had been held on a disorderly conduct charge. The moments following his release are captured on surveillance footage, showing him in the parking lot and then walking toward Wire Road, heading in the direction of Cooks Bridge Road. This footage would be the last known sighting of David Kantner.

Just four days after he was last seen, on August 16, 2023, Kantner's family grew deeply concerned. Having not seen or heard from him, they officially reported him as a missing person to the Aiken County Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office promptly launched an investigation and turned to the public for assistance in locating him. They disseminated his physical description and the circumstances of his disappearance, hoping that someone might have seen him after he walked away from the detention center. Despite these efforts and the initial media coverage of his case, the trail seemed to go cold. There were no immediate breakthroughs or reported sightings that would lead investigators to his whereabouts.

The days turned into weeks, and the weeks into months, with no resolution in the disappearance of David Kantner. His case joined the list of unresolved missing persons in Aiken County, a painful reality for his family who were left with unanswered questions. The initial details of his disappearance-his release from the detention center and his solitary walk down a rural road-provided a starting point for the investigation, but offered few clues as to what may have happened to him. The Aiken County Sheriff's Office has encouraged anyone with any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward. The overview of this case is one of a man who, after a minor brush with the law, vanished without a trace, leaving a void in the lives of those who know him and a lingering mystery for the community.
