In the rugged wilderness of eastern Snohomish County, Washington, a sense of unease settled over the family of Jakhobi Hale, a 21-year-old male from Seattle. On the morning of May 16, 2026, Jakhobi was visiting his grandparents at their property near Gold Hill, east of Darrington, to celebrate his grandmother's birthday. Around 10 a.m., he informed his family that he was going for a solo hike, heading north with a promise to be back before nightfall for a planned movie night. Leaving his cellphone and wallet behind, Jakhobi, who was familiar with the area from previous visits, ventured into the mountains equipped with only a machete, a flashlight, and a rain jacket, unprepared for an extended stay in the wilderness. As daylight faded and he did not return, his family's concern grew into a desperate search for the young man who was an expectant father and engaged to be married.

The initial response to Jakhobi's disappearance was swift and extensive. The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office launched a massive search and rescue operation that spanned nine days and involved approximately 3,200 hours of searching. Teams from multiple neighboring counties, including Pierce, King, Skagit, Kitsap, and Whatcom, joined the effort, deploying K9 units, drones, 4x4 teams, and the SnoHawk-1 helicopter to comb the challenging terrain. Despite these exhaustive efforts, which included up to 75 volunteers at a time, no significant trace of Jakhobi was found. The only potential clues discovered were a possible machete cut on some vegetation and a scent picked up by search dogs along the old Mountain Loop Highway and near a cell tower, though these did not lead to a breakthrough. A grainy trail camera image of two unidentified people in the area on the day he went missing also provided a sliver of a lead, with family pleading for them to come forward.

After the official search was scaled back, Jakhobi's family, led by his determined mother, Autumn Hale, refused to give up hope. They have continued to organize community-led searches, pleading for the assistance of experienced hikers, hunters, and anyone familiar with the dense forests and steep ravines surrounding the Gold Hill area. His mother has personally spent months searching and has started a GoFundMe to support the ongoing efforts, which include plans to use drones to inspect seven abandoned mines in the region. The family believes he may have been injured and unable to find his way back. Jakhobi is described as a light-skinned Black man, standing 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing around 195 pounds, with his brown hair in dreadlocks. He was last seen wearing an olive-green Helly Hansen rain jacket, gray pants, and black Harley-Davidson boots. The case remains an active missing person investigation, a heart-wrenching ordeal for a family clinging to the hope of finding answers and bringing their son home.
