In the spring of 1997, a young Canadian man named Ardavan Taherzadeh, a student at the University of British Columbia, embarked on a journey of self-discovery. He had taken a year off from his studies to teach English in Korea before setting out to explore the vast and captivating landscapes of Northern India. On May 21, 1997, while backpacking through the Kullu district, he made his last known contact with his family, a phone call from a village named Koshla. In that conversation, he expressed a desire to continue his travels and delve deeper into the heart of the country. This communication would be the last his loved ones would ever have with him. When his scheduled flight home on June 25, 1997, came and went without him on it, his family's concern grew into alarm. Three days later, on June 28, they officially reported him as a missing person to the West Vancouver Police Department. The search for Ardavan unfolded against the backdrop of the serene but notoriously perilous Parvati Valley, a region in the Himalayas that has long attracted international travelers and has also been the site of numerous unsolved disappearances. His mother, Homa Boustani, tirelessly pursued answers for years, even traveling to India herself in an effort to uncover any trace of her son. During her own investigation, she reportedly found a mortuary report in a Kullu district hospital detailing the cremation of a foreigner's body without the notification of any embassies, raising troubling questions about the handling of such cases by local authorities. Theories surrounding Ardavan's fate have varied, with some speculating that he may have been a victim of foul play, a grim reality that has befallen other tourists in the isolated valley. One investigation company suggested that he might have been murdered near Manikaran, with the death allegedly concealed by a village leader. Over the years, the hope of finding Ardavan alive has been tempered by the harsh realities of the region and the passage of time. His mother considered the possibility that he might have chosen to step away from his former life, as he had expressed in a letter to a friend a sense of questioning his life's direction. This idea, that some of the missing may have voluntarily disappeared to live a different life in the mountains, is a recurring theme in the valley's lore. However, the lack of any communication from Ardavan since that final phone call has made this possibility harder to sustain. A former police superintendent for the Kullu district acknowledged the immense challenges in solving older cases like Ardavan's, citing a lack of cooperation from some foreigners living in the area and earlier failings in police investigations.
