After a three-month adventure, he began his long drive home. The last time family and friends heard from him was on March 14, 2013. He contacted them via Skype from Matehuala, a city roughly 500 kilometers south of the U.S. border, explaining he was looking for a veterinarian for Maya before continuing his trip. His intended route was to cross into the United States at the border town of Nuevo Laredo, an area known to be a haven for drug cartel violence. Following the silence that fell after his last communication, a period of agonizing uncertainty began for Marc's loved ones. There is no official record that he ever made it across the border into the United States. In the time that followed his disappearance, some of his belongings surfaced, but they provided few answers. His dog, Maya, was discovered on the outskirts of Nuevo Laredo and was eventually returned to his family in Quebec. His van was also recovered after having been stolen, but individuals questioned in connection with the vehicle theft offered no information regarding Marc's whereabouts. Crucially, his personal possessions, including the laptop that served as his main link to home, were gone. The French-speaking traveler, who had only minimal English and Spanish skills and was not carrying a cellphone, had vanished, leaving his family to fear the worst. In the years since he went missing, Marc's family and friends have refused to give up hope, tirelessly working to find answers. They have created social media campaigns to spread awareness and have petitioned the Canadian government to appeal to Interpol for a more thorough investigation on the ground in Mexico. His family believes he was kidnapped. This fear was compounded by a reported, though unconfirmed, sighting in August 2013, when a woman claimed to have seen and spoken to Marc in a store in Nuevo Laredo. She reported that he seemed nervous and appeared to be under surveillance, unable to speak freely. Friends and family have expressed immense frustration with what they feel is a lack of communication and action from Mexican authorities.
