On April 21, 2019, David Mailloux left his parents' home in Saint-Alexandre-de-Kamouraska, Quebec, and hitchhiked to the village of Saint-Alexandre. He then boarded a taxi. David inquired about the cost of transportation to the Ottawa, Ontario area with the driver. Due to insufficient funds, he exited the vehicle and continued his journey on Route 289.
