In the summer of 2003, a young, pregnant woman named Sylvia Ann Guiboche vanished from her home in Winnipeg, Manitoba. At 20 years old, Sylvia was a mother to a daughter named Tina and was eagerly awaiting the birth of her second child, due in September of that year. She was last seen on June 13, 2003. Originally from Swan River, Manitoba, Sylvia had moved to Winnipeg only five months prior to her disappearance, seeking refuge from an abusive relationship. Her new life in the city, however, led her down a difficult path involving drugs and sex work. On the evening she was last seen, a cousin and a friend had visited her apartment, but she declined their invitation to go out, stating she was waiting for a male friend. Sylvia's family grew concerned when they didn't hear from her for an extended period, which was out of character for the young mother who was described as devoted to her daughter. Her family officially reported her missing in October 2003. At the time of her disappearance, Sylvia was described as being between 5'3" and 5'5" tall, weighing around 121 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. She had a scar on her right arm and shoulder. The initial investigation by the Winnipeg Police Service noted that Sylvia was known to frequent the areas of Sargent and Ellice Avenues, which were associated with high-risk activities. Years have passed without any sign of Sylvia, and her case has grown cold. In July 2012, Project Devote, a task force dedicated to investigating cases of missing and murdered persons in Manitoba, took over the investigation into Sylvia's disappearance. Her family, particularly her sister Nicole, has continued to advocate for her and believes they know who was involved in her disappearance, suggesting it was related to a drug debt that was unfairly placed on Sylvia. The case of Sylvia Ann Guiboche is a heartbreaking story of a young mother who vanished just as she was about to bring a new life into the world. Her disappearance highlights the vulnerabilities faced by Indigenous women and the lasting pain experienced by families who are left without answers. The investigation remains ongoing as her loved ones hold out hope for closure. Another cousin of Sylvia's, Amber Guiboche, also went missing from Winnipeg in 2010.
