On July 6, 2014, at approximately 7:00 a.m., Wally Giesbrecht went for a walk from a local motel on the 16 Highway bypass in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. When he did not return to the hotel, his family searched the area, including the shoreline of the North Saskatchewan River and Finlayson Island's pedestrian trails with the assistance of the North Battleford RCMP, while the Fire Department conducted a water-based search of the river, all to no avail.
