In the bustling Brooklyn neighborhood of Bushwick, 58-year-old Maria Quinones lived a life that came to an abrupt and silent end in the spring of 2014. A Hispanic female with graying hair and brown eyes, one of which was a lazy right eye, Maria was last seen on March 5, 2014. When she vanished, she was reportedly wearing a white shirt and grey shorts.
For months, her absence was a deepening mystery to those who knew her, marking the beginning of a long and painful search for answers by her family.
As the weeks turned into months with no word from Maria, her sister Elizabeth became increasingly worried. Having not seen or heard from her sibling since March, she officially filed a missing persons report with the New York City Police Department on September 10, 2014. Maria was described as being 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighing around 170 pounds, with a distinctive tattoo of an owl on her upper right breast. The investigation into her disappearance began, but with few leads, her case grew cold, leaving her loved ones in a state of uncertainty and anguish, unaware of the sinister truth behind her disappearance.
The agonizing mystery came to a shocking end four years later, on August 28, 2018, when Maria's boyfriend, Ricky Gonzalez, walked into a police precinct in Manhattan and confessed to her murder. He admitted that sometime between March and September of 2014, he had stabbed Maria to death in her Wilson Avenue home. In a horrific attempt to conceal his crime, Gonzalez dismembered her body, placed the remains in garbage bags, and left them on the curb for trash collection. His motive was appallingly cruel; he killed Maria so he could steal her Social Security benefits, a sum that would total approximately $68,000 over the next four years. In 2023, Gonzalez was convicted of second-degree murder and other charges and was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. This brought a legal conclusion to the case, but it offered little solace to a grieving family.
