On May 19, 1998, at approximately 7:00 p.m., Rémi Engrand left a residence for men in Valleyfield, Quebec, for a walk with two other residents of the center where he had been staying for a few days. They went to the Delpha-Sauvé Park, where Rémi wanted to go swimming in the river, near the waterfall.
