On a Sunday afternoon, March 24, 1991, four-year-old Michael Wayne Dunahee vanished from a playground in Victoria, British Columbia. He was at the Blanshard Elementary School playground, just a short distance from his mother, Crystal, who was participating in a flag football practice, and his father, Bruce, who was a spectator. Michael had asked to go to the playground and was last seen around 12:30 p.m. When his father went to check on him minutes later, the little boy was gone. At the time of his disappearance, Michael was wearing a blue-hooded jacket with red lining, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles t-shirt, multi-coloured rugby pants, and blue sneakers. The disappearance of Michael Dunahee triggered one of the most extensive missing person investigations in Canadian history. The Victoria Police Department quickly classified the case as an abduction, and all available detectives were assigned to it. Hundreds of volunteers and multiple police agencies joined the exhaustive search for the young boy. In the immediate aftermath, tips poured in from across North America. Investigators looked into known sex offenders and interviewed numerous individuals who were in the vicinity of the playground on that day. One witness reported seeing a man in his late 40s or early 50s with a brown van near the area. Despite the massive effort and thousands of tips received over the years, no solid leads have ever emerged. Over the three decades since Michael was last seen, his family has held onto hope for his return. They have been instrumental in raising awareness for their son's case and for other missing children. The family organizes the annual "Keep the Hope Alive" walk/run to commemorate Michael and to support child safety initiatives. The Victoria Police Department continues to actively investigate Michael's disappearance, and in 2021, they released an age-enhanced sketch of what he might look like as an adult and launched an online portal for tips. Despite numerous tips and several instances of individuals being tested for DNA comparison, no match has ever been found. The case remains a haunting and unsolved mystery, a painful reminder of a little boy who disappeared in a moment's time. The investigation is one of the largest in Canadian history, yet a definitive answer as to what happened to Michael remains elusive.
