In the winter of 2016, a 42-year-old mother and grandmother named Shelley Joy Desrochers vanished from London, Ontario. The last confirmed sighting of her was on January 2, 2016, in the area of Lorne Avenue and English Street in the city's Old East Village. Those who knew Shelley described her as a lovable, caring, and happy-go-lucky person who enjoyed spending time with her family. However, she had a difficult life, having been in and out of foster homes from a young age due to abusive parents. As an adult, she struggled with PTSD and substance abuse. Despite her challenges, she was a well-known member of her community who found joy in simple activities like reading, cooking, and watching movies. Concern for Shelley's well-being grew when friends and family had not seen or heard from her for several weeks. A request for a police welfare check was made on January 21, 2016, which officially launched a missing persons investigation. The concern escalated when her Ontario disability cheque, which she had received at the end of January, remained untouched in her bank account. In the early days of her disappearance, her loved ones organized searches, distributed missing person flyers, and canvassed local businesses for any information or surveillance footage that might offer a clue. Over the course of the investigation, some of her personal belongings were discovered; her purse, containing her cellphone, was located in a residence known for drug-related activity, and her health card was found three years after she went missing in the parking lot of a walk-in clinic. Years have passed, and the investigation into Shelley's disappearance remains active and ongoing. Police have received and followed up on hundreds of tips and have conducted extensive searches and forensic examinations of evidence. A significant development arose when investigators identified a person of interest who was connected to both Shelley's case and the 2009 disappearance of another London woman, Kathryn Bordato. This individual provided limited cooperation and was believed to have withheld information from the police. This person has since died, which police stated closed a key avenue of inquiry in both cases. Community and volunteer organizations have also played a role, raising awareness through rallies and billboards, and conducting independent searches with canine units. The case of Shelley Desrochers is a troubling mystery; a 42-year-old woman with distinctive tattoos and a pigeon-toed walk disappeared without a trace. Despite persistent efforts from law enforcement, her family, and community advocates, no significant leads have emerged to explain what happened to her, leaving her loved ones in a painful state of uncertainty.
