On July 10, 1997, 79-year-old Bernard Champagne, a man living in the Mattice-Val Côté Township area near Kapuskasing in northern Ontario, disappeared from the rural property that had been his home for decades. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police's Canada's Missing database, Bernard lived alone in a cabin situated behind the residence of Richard Rodrigue in Mattice-Val Côté.
