On a quiet farm situated between Vegreville and Two Hills in Alberta, 17-year-old James Nestor Charles Candy was navigating a difficult summer in 2017. The youngest of six siblings in a blended family, James was described as a quiet young man with a "wicked sense of humour" who loved animals, baseball, and the rodeo. However, he had been grappling with several challenges; he was being relentlessly bullied at school because of his size, had been unsuccessful in securing a job he wanted, and was dealing with unreciprocated feelings for a young woman. Compounding these struggles was the profound loss of his older brother, who had died from alcohol poisoning three years earlier, an event that deeply affected James. On the evening of August 6, 2017, after his mother found a small amount of marijuana in his pocket, his parents had a calm discussion with him about their concerns, particularly given their family's history with substance abuse. After the talk, plans were made for the following day, "I love you" was exchanged, and James went to his bedroom around 11 p.m. The next morning, around 9:30 a.m. on August 7, 2017, James's father went to his room and found it empty. The bedroom window was open, and upon searching the room, his family discovered a suicide note left on his desk. It became apparent that James had slipped out of the window sometime during the night. He had left behind his wallet, ATM card, and learner's license, but had taken his cowboy hat, a Swiss army knife, and his lariat, a rope he used on the farm. His family immediately began searching the property, and when they could not find him, they contacted the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). This initiated a massive search of the surrounding rural area that lasted for three to four days. The extensive effort involved multiple fire departments, search dogs, and helicopters, but tragically, no sign of James or his belongings was found. In the years following his disappearance, the case has grown cold, leaving his family with unanswered questions. An early lead during the initial search, where cadaver dogs indicated a slough on the family property, ended in disappointment after the RCMP drained it and found nothing connected to James. There have been several unconfirmed sightings, including one at a Walmart in Calgary, but none have led to his whereabouts. A strange and threatening message sent to James's Facebook account in December 2017 added another layer of mystery, but its origin and intent remain unknown. Despite extensive and ongoing searches by his family and volunteers, no physical evidence has ever been recovered. The disappearance of James Candy is an overview of a heartbreaking mystery, a story of a troubled young man who vanished without a trace from his family farm, leaving behind a note and a void of information.
