The two were traveling on the lead sled, a considerable distance ahead of the second sled in their party. The journey took a devastating turn when the two men on the following sled, approximately 2.5 kilometers behind, witnessed a horrifying scene unfold from a distance of about 183 meters. They saw the lead sled, carrying Russell and his friend, break through the ice. By the time the second team reached the location, both men had vanished beneath the frigid water. In a desperate rescue attempt, they managed to pull Russell's friend from the icy depths, but tragically, he could not be revived. Despite the immediate response and subsequent dragging operations, Russell Angus Bonner was never seen again. The unforgiving waters held him in their grasp, and he did not resurface. The search efforts in the remote and challenging terrain proved fruitless, leaving behind a painful void for his loved ones and a case that would remain unresolved for decades.
