In the summer of 2022, concern grew for a 38-year-old man from Calgary, Alberta, named Steeve Blanchette Rochefort. He was last seen in the northeast community of Mayland Heights on July 11th, and after that day, all communication from him ceased. His family grew worried for his wellbeing as attempts to contact him were unsuccessful. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as being approximately 183 centimetres (6'0") tall, weighing around 73 kilograms (160 lbs), with a slim build, blue eyes, and brown hair. The Calgary Police Service was alerted, and an investigation into his whereabouts began, though initially, there was no indication of foul play. As the search for him continued, more detailed descriptions emerged to aid in his identification. Authorities noted that Blanchette Rochefort has a number of distinctive features. He speaks with a French accent and has difficulty hearing out of one of his ears. He also has a noticeable physical characteristic: a portion of the middle finger on his right hand is missing. Additionally, he has prominent and colourful tattoos on both of his forearms. These details were circulated in public appeals for information, with police hoping someone might recognize him and come forward. By May of 2023, he was also wanted on warrants for several assault-related offences and was believed to have connections to the Edmonton area. The nature of the case took a significant turn in early 2024. By this time, Blanchette Rochefort, now 39, was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for failing to appear in court. The court appearance was related to serious charges, including sexual assault, sexual interference with a child under 16, and invitation to sexual touching with a child under 16. The initial missing person investigation evolved as law enforcement transitioned to a search for a wanted individual facing grave accusations. The overview of this case begins with a family's concern for a missing loved one, which then shifted to a police search for a man wanted on assault charges, and ultimately escalated to a nationwide warrant for his failure to face charges of sexual abuse.
