In the winter of 2007, a 22-year-old mother named Danita Faith Bigeagle vanished from Regina, Saskatchewan, leaving behind her two young children and a family who would tirelessly search for answers. A member of the Ocean Man First Nation, Danita was last officially seen on February 11, 2007, in the 800 block of Victoria Avenue in Regina. At the time of her disappearance, she was described as a slender Indigenous woman, 5'6" tall and weighing about 110 pounds, with short, straight black hair and brown eyes. She had several distinguishing marks, including four small scars on her forehead and a tattoo of a happy face with the letter "D" on the web of her right hand. When she was last seen, she was wearing a black quilted winter parka with a drawstring waist, a black "Casper" t-shirt, black jeans, a black toque, and white running shoes. The days following Danita's disappearance were filled with anguish and frustration for her family. Her mother, Diane Bigeagle, reported her missing on February 14, 2007, but felt her concerns were initially dismissed by law enforcement, who suggested Danita was likely out partying. This perceived inaction spurred Diane to become a vocal advocate for her daughter and for other missing and murdered Indigenous women. Conflicting information emerged about Danita's last moments; while official reports pinpointed Victoria Avenue, Diane heard from neighbors that her daughter may have been taken by men in a black SUV from in front of her home on Garnet Street. This discrepancy, coupled with what she described as a lack of sincere communication from investigators, eventually led her to stop engaging with the police directly. Over the years, numerous tips and potential sightings surfaced, including reports that Danita might have been in Winnipeg, prompting her mother to make countless trips to search for her, which ultimately turned out to be fruitless. The search for Danita has been a long and painful journey for her family, marked by both hope and heartbreak. In 2010, acting on a tip that Danita had been murdered and her remains were in an area west of Regina, her family, with support from their community and the Ocean Man First Nation, organized a massive search and offered a $10,000 reward for information. The search uncovered some women's clothing and a single bone, but investigators later determined the bone was animal and the clothing was not related to any missing person case. Despite the years that have passed, Danita's case remains an active cold case with the Regina Police Service. Her disappearance has left a profound void in the lives of her loved ones, particularly her two children, who were just nine months and eleven years old when she went missing. The case is a stark reminder of the ongoing crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada, with a family left to grapple with unanswered questions and the enduring pain of not knowing what happened to their beloved Danita.
