In the late summer of 1992, a 58-year-old man named David Wieler Neufeld vanished from Toronto, Ontario, leaving behind a perplexing mystery. On September 21st, he was seen for the last time, not alone, but in the company of two other men, 37-year-old Peter Bentzen and 28-year-old Kenneth Vaughan. The three men were reportedly involved with one another as "runners," with a plan to smuggle cigarettes into Canada from the United States by boat. Their disappearance under these circumstances added a layer of complexity and concern for those who knew them and for the authorities who would come to investigate their case. The initial investigation into their disappearance uncovered a few telling clues, but these only served to deepen the enigma. David's vehicle and the trailer for a boat were discovered abandoned at Ashbridges Bay, a well-known park and marina area along the shores of Lake Ontario in Toronto. However, the boat itself, described as an "aging" vessel that had been borrowed from a friend, was nowhere to be found. The absence of the boat was a critical and confounding piece of the puzzle. Despite searches and appeals for information, neither the boat nor any of the three men have been seen or heard from since that September day. David Wieler Neufeld was described as being 5'9" tall and weighing 181 pounds, with a medium build. He had blue eyes, wavy black hair, and a ruddy complexion. A distinguishing feature was a scar on his left hand. The case of the three missing men remains unsolved, a lingering question for their families and for law enforcement. The discovery of the vehicle and trailer at the water's edge points to a journey that began, but its destination and the fate of David Wieler Neufeld and his companions remain unknown, lost somewhere in the passage of time and the vastness of the lake.
