In the vast, remote wilderness of northern Saskatchewan, the story of Simeon Ernest Bear's disappearance began on July 23, 1982. At 25 years old, Simeon was last seen setting out in a boat on the expansive Reindeer Lake, embarking on a familiar journey from Southend to Lawrence Bay. He was working at the time, helping to transport fuel and supplies to the Lawrence Bay Lodge, a remote fishing destination accessible only by water or air. The trip was one he had made countless times, as he was an experienced boater who knew the lake and its potential hazards very well. When he failed to arrive at his destination, concern mounted, sparking searches of the vast lake and its rugged shoreline for any sign of the young man or his vessel. Initial searches for Simeon were fruitless, and for decades, his case grew cold, leaving his family with unanswered questions. Over the years, however, pieces of the puzzle began to surface, though they offered little clarity. His boat was eventually discovered, heavily damaged, in a sunken state in Reindeer Lake. In separate locations, other belongings were found; his hat was located on a small island, and a paddle was recovered several kilometers away from where the boat was found. These discoveries only deepened the mystery of what transpired on the lake that day. For 34 years, there was reportedly no official missing person's report filed by the RCMP until new information prompted them to open an investigation. Simeon was an Indigenous man with shoulder-length black hair and brown eyes. A notable characteristic was that the index, middle, and ring fingers on his right hand were disfigured. On the day he vanished, he was believed to be wearing a green summer jacket with yellow stripes, blue jeans, and black and red rubber boots. The investigation into his disappearance remains active, and his family continues to hold out hope for answers. The circumstances surrounding Simeon Ernest Bear's vanishing are a blend of troubling discoveries and a lack of definitive evidence, leaving a painful void for his loved ones. The discovery of his wrecked boat and scattered belongings points to a tragic event, but the exact nature of what happened—whether it was a boating accident or something more sinister as his brother has suggested—remains unknown after more than four decades.
