In the summer of 2005, a compassionate and unsettling mystery began to unfold in Ontario involving a 45-year-old dentist named Noriharu Amano. Known to some as "Dr. Ness", he was last seen on July 24, 2005, at the Sault Ste. Marie Airport. On that day, Amano departed in his private Cessna C-172 aircraft, with his destination set for Marathon, Ontario. However, he never reached his intended destination, and all contact was lost after his plane was observed circling over Goulais Bay. Amano was a man of medium build, standing at 5'7" and weighing 181 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. It wasn't until August 2, 2005, over a week after he was last seen, that Noriharu Amano was officially reported as a missing person. This report triggered an immediate and extensive search operation, one of the largest coordinated efforts in the region's history. The search for Amano and his distinctive aircraft—a Cessna with white wings tipped in red, a red fuselage with white stripes, a white underside, and a red engine cowling—spanned a vast area of more than 30,000 square kilometers. Multiple agencies, including the Ontario Provincial Police, the Canadian Armed Forces, the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA), and the Canadian Coast Guard, collaborated in the search across land, air, and water. The significant resources deployed included three CC-130 Hercules aircraft, three CH-146 Griffon helicopters, a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter, and several Canadian Coast Guard vessels. Despite the massive and prolonged search efforts, no trace of Noriharu Amano or his Cessna C-172 has ever been located. The comprehensive ground, air, and marine searches yielded no clues as to what happened after his plane was seen over Goulais Bay. The case grew cold, leaving family, friends, and investigators without answers. The disappearance of Noriharu Amano is a perplexing case that began with a routine flight and ended in a complete mystery. The lack of any wreckage or evidence has made it impossible to determine the cause of his disappearance, and after many years, his family is still searching for answers, hoping that someone might hold the key piece of information that could finally bring closure.
