In the autumn of 2017, a 58-year-old Russian man named Sergey Cherepov was visiting the United States on a business trip with his colleagues from Aeroflot Russian Airlines. On September 14, the group decided to enjoy the natural beauty of Washington state with a day hike near North Bend. They made their way to the Goldmyer Hot Springs, a popular destination nestled in the Cascade Mountains. At some point during their outing, Cherepov walked away from his companions and was never seen again. Compounding the concern for his well-being was a head injury he had sustained in a fall approximately ten hours before the hike, which required a bandage. His personal belongings, including his wallet, cell phone, and backpack, were later found undisturbed in his hotel room in Tukwila.

The alarm was raised when Cherepov's friends reached their designated meeting point and he failed to appear. After their own search proved fruitless, they contacted the authorities the following day. The King County Sheriff's Office initiated an extensive search and rescue mission in the rugged terrain surrounding Snoqualmie Mountain. The search was fraught with challenges, as the area is characterized by dense forests and thick vegetation, making visibility difficult. Rescuers combed the trails, fearing he may have had an accident and fallen off the path where he would be obscured by the dense brush. The weather also became a significant obstacle, with rain further complicating the search efforts. Despite the dedicated efforts of the search teams, no trace of Cherepov was found. After five days of intensive searching, the official search was suspended.

The disappearance of Sergey Cherepov left his family with unanswered questions and a profound sense of loss. In a poignant effort to find closure, his son, who shares the same name, traveled from Russia to Washington in May of the following year. He was accompanied by his wife and members of the King County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team as he retraced his father's last known steps in the area of Goldmyer Hot Springs. Authorities stated that Cherepov had reportedly felt unwell and decided to head back to the car alone, at which point he mistakenly took a wrong turn. The case remains one of the few unsolved missing person cases for the lead detective, who noted that witnesses had last seen him walking near a washed-out log bridge. Despite the passage of time, the investigation into what happened to Sergey Cherepov has not yielded any definitive answers, leaving his whereabouts a mystery.
