In the spring of 2022, a young life took an unexpected turn in Acworth, Georgia. On March 18, 2022, 16-year-old Juana Mateo-Hernandez, a female of Hispanic descent, was last seen in the area. At the time of her disappearance, she was described as being between 4'9" and 5'0" tall and weighing between 110 and 125 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. A distinguishing feature noted by authorities were multiple tattoos on both of her forearms. The circumstances surrounding her disappearance indicate that she, an unaccompanied child from Guatemala, ran away with her 20-year-old cousin, who was also described as her boyfriend. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office in Woodstock is the primary investigating agency for this case.

The initial stages of the investigation revealed that the pair were believed to be traveling north out of Georgia, a fact corroborated by a toll camera that captured their vehicle. For a period, there was some communication between Juana and a family member, which provided a small glimmer of hope, but eventually, the trail went cold. The case remained stagnant for a significant time until new efforts were made to reinvestigate in 2024. This fresh look at the evidence led investigators to two potential locations in Cincinnati, Ohio, suggesting a significant break in the case. Further investigation into her activities revealed that Juana frequently sends wire transfers to her family back in Guatemala, providing a potential way to track her general whereabouts.

A remarkable and unusual development occurred when Juana was purportedly captured on the porch of one of the Cincinnati homes by a Google Street View vehicle. This discovery seemed to place her concretely in that location. Despite this promising lead, local law enforcement in Cincinnati encountered difficulties. When they visited both of the identified addresses, they were unable to make contact with anyone inside. After these unsuccessful attempts, their active checks on the locations ceased, and communication regarding her case with the primary investigating agency reportedly ended. This case began with a young girl from Guatemala leaving her new home in Georgia with an older companion. The investigation has crossed state lines, with leads pointing strongly to her presence in Ohio. The unique evidence from the Google Street View vehicle, combined with her continued financial support of her family, paints a picture of a life being lived under the radar.
