On a summer day in July of 1991, 23-year-old Michelle Lyn West left her family's apartment in Tucson, Arizona, with the intention of visiting a friend who lived in a nearby complex. At the time, she was residing with her parents and her two young children, a four-year-old daughter and a two-year-old son. The walk to her friend's home was a short one, but it is a journey from which she never returned. It is unclear whether she made it to her friend's residence to find no one home, or if she vanished somewhere along the way. What is known is that from that day forward, her family and children never saw or heard from her again. The circumstances surrounding Michelle's disappearance are shrouded in uncertainty, with conflicting accounts of her last known movements. One report from 1996 suggested she was last seen using a payphone across the street from her apartment on 29th Street before she disappeared. Another, more widely reported account, details her plan to walk to her friend's home. She was believed to have been wearing jeans, a tie-dye shirt, and a red or possibly red and black checkered sweatshirt. Michelle is described as a female of White/Caucasian and American Indian/Alaska Native descent, with brown hair and brown eyes, standing between 5'4" and 5'6" and weighing approximately 130 to 135 pounds. Decades have passed since Michelle West was last seen, and her case has grown cold, yet the hope for answers endures. Her family has consistently maintained that she would never have voluntarily abandoned her children. Investigators believe she may have been a victim of foul play, and the Tucson Police Department's Cold Case Homicide Unit continues to seek information regarding her disappearance. In an effort to aid in potential identification, DNA samples have been collected from her mother and son. The case serves as a somber reminder of a young mother who vanished, leaving behind a family to grapple with her absence and the unanswered questions that still linger more than thirty years later.
