In the quiet area of Vida, Oregon, a distressing story began to unfold for 42-year-old Michael Trevor Owen Naughton on February 18, 2026. On that day, the silver 2009 Ford Fusion he was driving ran out of gas along the McKenzie Highway, east of Springfield. This seemingly minor inconvenience would set in motion a series of events that would leave his family and community deeply concerned. Faced with a stalled vehicle, Michael, who often went by Trevor, embarked on a long walk to find fuel. His family believes he walked approximately four miles to a forestry road and then another six miles to reach a gas station. Surveillance footage from the station captured him that afternoon purchasing two gas cans, one red and one yellow, along with a few snacks and drinks, items that would later become crucial clues in the search for him.
After making his purchase, Michael reportedly waited outside the store for a time before speaking with a man in a pickup truck. He arranged for a ride back to his stranded car, paying the man for his help. However, their journey was cut short when they encountered a locked forest road gate, preventing them from driving any further. The driver left Michael at the gate at about 2:30 p.m., from where he intended to walk the remaining distance to his car, carrying the newly filled gas cans. The last known communication from Michael was a text message to his mother at 3:42 p.m., in which he mentioned it would be some time before he reached his vehicle. Compounding the situation were Michael's serious health issues; he had previously suffered two brain aneurysms, which resulted in some mental health challenges and a distinct limp. He was also missing most of the toes on his left foot.
The day after he was last seen, on February 19, 2026, Michael was officially reported missing, launching an extensive search effort. His car was soon located in the Gate Creek area east of Vida. The Lane County Sheriff's Office, along with other agencies, deployed search and rescue teams, search dogs, drones, and helicopters to comb the rugged terrain. During the search, some of the items Michael had purchased were discovered beyond the forest gate, including the red gas can, candy wrappers, and a Mountain Dew bottle. Investigators also found evidence that he may have become disoriented, as two small campfires were found about a half-mile apart. Tragically, the search came to a somber conclusion on April 21, 2026, when a private investigator hired by his family discovered Michael's body. He was found on an abandoned spur road more than a mile east of where his car had been parked. The recovery of his remains was complicated by downed timber from the 2020 Holiday Farm Fire.
