In the winter of 1997, a young mother named Anna Marie Zirkle seemingly vanished from her home on the east side of Columbus, Ohio. At 22 years old, Anna was navigating the challenges of raising two toddler sons with their father, Derrin D. Williams. The couple, who had recently moved from Warren, Ohio, for a fresh start, shared their home in the 300 block of east Roosevelt Avenue with Williams's cousin, Troy Austin. On February 1, 1997, the day Anna was last seen, Williams was away visiting friends back in Warren, a city about 170 miles from Columbus. The only account of her departure came from Austin, who was at the home with Anna and her children. According to him, Anna expressed that she was "tired of everything and needed a break," giving him money to buy Greyhound bus tickets to send their sons to be with their father in Warren. Following Anna's alleged instructions, Troy Austin escorted the two young children on the bus to Warren, where they arrived safely with their father. However, Anna was never seen or heard from again. It wasn't until five days later, on February 6, that a neighbor officially reported her missing, raising questions about why those closer to her had not already done so. Friends and family were adamant that Anna, a devoted mother, would never have willingly abandoned her children. Their suspicions were deepened by the fact that she left behind all of her personal belongings, including her clothing and identification. Critically, an uncashed check for $388 was also found, something a person intending to start a new life would likely have taken with them. These details painted a grim picture that starkly contrasted the story of a mother who simply walked away. The circumstances of Anna Zirkle's disappearance led law enforcement to suspect foul play almost immediately, believing she was likely a victim of murder. Her case grew cold over the years, but in 2011, a tip led investigators to a nine-acre wooded property in northeastern Ohio, a region Anna was familiar with from her upbringing in Ashtabula County. Authorities, including K-9 units and anthropologists, searched the area in Orwell for her remains, hoping to finally provide closure for her family, especially her two sons who were toddlers at the time of her disappearance. Despite the intensive two-day search, nothing was found, and the search was called off. The case of Anna Marie Zirkle remains an unsolved and painful mystery. While authorities believe she was murdered and her remains may be in the Windsor Township area, the lack of evidence has left her loved ones without answers and her children to grow up without their mother.
