On a summer evening, Evidence Technician Elijah Harris, Jr. was on duty in the Gresham neighborhood of Chicago. While in the process of issuing a parking ticket, he was approached by a citizen who reported seeing a teenager armed with a gun and riding a bicycle. Shortly after, Officer Harris identified and stopped a sixteen-year-old matching the description. As he began to frisk the young man against his patrol car, the situation took a tragic turn. The teenager managed to pull out a .22 caliber handgun and shot Officer Harris in the abdomen. Despite his severe injury, Officer Harris was able to call for assistance over his radio, reporting that he had been shot. Responding officers arrived at the scene to find Officer Harris wounded. He was able to provide them with a description of the shooter, whom he knew by a nickname. He was then rushed to the hospital for medical attention. Thanks to eyewitness accounts and the information provided by Officer Harris, the suspect was apprehended at his home within half an hour. Initially facing charges of aggravated battery and attempted murder, the charges against the teenager were upgraded to first-degree murder after Officer Harris tragically succumbed to his injuries months later. Elijah Harris was a fifty-one-year-old veteran of the Chicago Police Department, with over nineteen years of service at the time of the incident. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and was serving in the U.S. Army Reserve. His career was marked by numerous honorable mentions and a unit meritorious award. He was survived by his four children, his mother, and his siblings. In the years that followed, Officer Harris's star was retired and enshrined at Chicago Police Headquarters as a tribute to his service and sacrifice. The case concluded with the arrest and charging of the individual responsible, bringing a close to the investigation into the line-of-duty death of a dedicated officer.
