He was leaving a friend's house with the intention of traveling to Tijuana, Mexico, accompanied by his friend. The two were traveling in a gray 2012 Toyota Highlander. Chu has not been seen or heard from since his departure.
The vehicle in which Chu was traveling was later located in Mexico, but there was no sign of Chu himself.
The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is the investigating agency for this case, which was reported on January 3, 2020. At the time of his disappearance, Chu was 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighed approximately 260 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.
Distinctive physical features include several tattoos: the name "Jonathan" on his right forearm, a dragon on his chest, and a koi fish on his left arm.
