In the late summer of 2025, concern began to grow for 60-year-old Debbie Ann Marrero. Family members last saw her in August of that year, and while she was known to stay with relatives in the area of Selma Avenue in Danville, Virginia, she had become unreachable by phone. As the weeks turned into months with no contact, her family officially reported her missing in November 2025, prompting an active and extensive investigation by the Danville Police Department. Authorities pursued all available leads, looking into her known associations and personal history in an effort to locate her. By early 2026, the police department included her case in a public appeal for information on Missing Persons Awareness Day, noting that while she was unreachable, it was possible she was still in the local area at an unknown location. The case remained active, with investigators reviewing it monthly for any new information that might lead to finding her and maintaining communication with her family. The search for Debbie Ann Marrero came to a tragic end in March 2026. Acting on a lead received from the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office, investigators from the Danville Police Department and the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office conducted a search in a southeastern section of Pittsylvania County. There, near Mountain Hill Road in Ringgold, they discovered her remains. Following the discovery, her body was transported to the Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death. The investigation into her death led to the arrests of two individuals, 63-year-old Deborah Lynn Hurd and 61-year-old David Thomas Gunnell, who were both charged with her murder and held without bond. The case that began as a search for a missing woman concluded with a homicide investigation, bringing a painful closure to her family.
