In the spring of 1959, a life-altering decision set the stage for the enduring mystery of seventeen-year-old Diane White's disappearance. A young woman with brown hair, gray eyes, and a distinctive freckle on the end of her nose, Diane was last seen in Phoenix, Arizona, on May 6, 1959. Earlier that year, in March, her family had relocated from San Bernardino, California, to the quieter surroundings of Dolan Springs, Arizona. Diane, however, chose to remain in California, her heart tied to her sixteen-year-old boyfriend, Bennie Milton Webb. Not long after her family's move, Diane visited them in Arizona with significant news: she was pregnant and intended to marry Bennie, who was then in the Phoenix area. Despite her father's disapproval, Diane's mother and younger brother attended her wedding in Indio, California, on that May day, a day that would become the last time her immediate family would ever see her. Following the wedding, Diane kept in touch with her family through letters for a few months, painting a picture of newlywed life. The final letter her family received from her was postmarked August 22, 1959. After that, the communication abruptly ceased. Sometime later, Diane's husband, Bennie Webb, offered a perplexing account of her absence. He claimed to have given her $100 to take a bus back to her parents' home, but she never arrived. In 1961, in response to a worried letter from Diane's mother, Bennie reiterated this story, stating he hadn't seen or heard from Diane in a long time. His account, however, was coupled with a troubling lack of cooperation with the subsequent investigation. He reportedly refused to take a polygraph test and has even denied ever being married to Diane, a claim contradicted by their marriage certificate. The years that followed were filled with anguish and uncertainty for Diane's family. A glimmer of what seemed to be a resolution came in 1967 when the remains of a young woman were discovered in Southern Arizona. Law enforcement was insistent that the remains were Diane's, but her mother steadfastly refused to claim them, guided by a parent's intuition that it was not her daughter. Decades later, in 2013, DNA testing confirmed her mother's belief; the remains were not Diane's. The case of Diane White, also known by her married name Diane Webb, remains an unsolved and deeply troubling mystery. The official investigation, handled by the Phoenix Police Department, has been hampered by the passage of time and the uncooperative stance of the last person known to have seen her.
