In the early morning hours of September 16, 2018, the life of 55-year-old Anthony Smith of Chesapeake, Virginia, was tragically cut short in his own home. What began as a domestic dispute over a misplaced cell phone escalated into an act of violence that would forever alter the lives of his family. The events unfolded at the family's residence on Bernies Court S. in Chesapeake. Anthony, a beloved husband and father, was a man known for his friendly smile and his work as an Automotive Instructor at New Horizons Regional Education Center. His passing left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the many students he had mentored over the years. The tragic events of that morning were set in motion by a heated argument. During the dispute, Anthony's son, Tevin Smith, then 25 years old, produced a firearm. In the ensuing chaos, Anthony was fatally shot, and another of his sons was wounded, shot in the face but ultimately survived his injuries. The boys' mother, who was present during the altercation, managed to escape through a window and call for help from a neighbor's house after hearing the gunshots. When police arrived at the scene around 1:50 a.m., they found Anthony Smith deceased. The surviving son identified his brother, Tevin, as the shooter. Following the shooting, Tevin Smith fled the scene on foot, prompting a search by law enforcement. He was apprehended later that same day. Tevin was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, aggravated malicious wounding, and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He eventually pleaded guilty to the charges against him. On May 28, 2021, Tevin Smith was sentenced to 38 years in prison, with 23 of those years suspended, leaving him with 15 years to serve for the death of his father and the wounding of his brother. This case is a heartbreaking example of how a seemingly minor disagreement can spiral into a devastating tragedy, resulting in the loss of a loved one and the fracturing of a family. The case is now closed, as Anthony Smith was regrettably located deceased.
