Patricia "Patty" Vaughan was 19 years old when she was last seen on May 15, 1982, in Mathias, a rural unincorporated community in Hardy County, West Virginia. Originally from East Hartford, Connecticut, Vaughan had reportedly run away from an abusive home situation. She and a friend hitchhiked south, eventually arriving in Mathias, where she moved in with a long-haul truck driver named Galen "Doug" Sager.
