Patricia "Patty" Vaughan was 19 years old when she was last seen on May 15, 1982, in Mathias, a rural unincorporated community in Hardy County, West Virginia. Originally from East Hartford, Connecticut, Vaughan had reportedly run away from an abusive home situation. She and a friend hitchhiked south, eventually arriving in Mathias, where she moved in with a long-haul truck driver named Galen "Doug" Sager.
Not long after her arrival, Vaughan was seen with a black eye, and her friend departed, leaving her with Sager. She has not been seen or heard from since.
Vaughan was a student at Penney High School and Synergy Alternative High School in East Hartford. She is described as a white female with brown hair and blue eyes, standing 5'5" tall and weighing approximately 120 pounds. She had pierced ears, a previous fracture on her right forearm, and her lower wisdom teeth were impacted.
One of the most perplexing aspects of Vaughan's case is the significant delay in officially reporting her as a missing person. For reasons that remain unclear, she was not reported missing until 1995, a full thirteen years after her disappearance. The investigation into her case is being handled by the Connecticut State Police. Despite the passage of several decades, few details are available in her case, and no one has ever been charged in connection with her disappearance. Investigators have considered the possibility that Sager may be connected to other unsolved murders along the I-81 corridor, but this has not been substantiated.
