In the winter of 2020, a 31-year-old man named Robert Sterling McCarthy vanished, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions. On February 20, 2020, he was at his girlfriend's home on Prince Cole Street in Manassas, Virginia. Following an argument, he left the residence and was never seen or heard from by his loved ones again. McCarthy, who sometimes went by the name Sterling Turner, was a white male with black hair and brown eyes, standing at 5'10" and weighing between 170 and 200 pounds. He had a distinctive tattoo of the state of Maryland on his right shoulder and walked with a noticeable limp that favored his right leg. At the time he went missing, he had a goatee. The days following his departure from the Manassas home provided a few digital clues, but these soon went cold. Investigators discovered that McCarthy's bank account was last used on February 28, 2020, for a ride-share service to Baltimore, Maryland. Another report indicates his last known social media contact and a bank card purchase occurred on February 26, 2020, in Baltimore City. It has been suggested that he traveled to Baltimore to purchase narcotics, a trip he had reportedly made in the past. Although he had a history of substance abuse, sources indicated he was in recovery at the time of his disappearance. The journey to Baltimore marks the last known trace of his movements, after which all communication and financial activity ceased. Years have passed since Robert Sterling McCarthy was last seen, and his case remains an active and unsolved missing person investigation. The Prince William County Police Department has continued to seek information from the public, issuing renewed pleas for assistance even years after he vanished. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance are unsettling for his family and the community. The narrative of his case is one of a sudden departure after a disagreement, followed by a final known trip to a nearby city, and then a complete and total silence. The overview of the case is centered on a man who left his girlfriend's home in Virginia, utilized a ride-share to Baltimore where the last of his financial activities were recorded, and has not been seen or heard from since, leaving his whereabouts an enduring mystery.
