On August 25, 1999, one-year-old Iman Hisham Abass A. Almetnawy and her four-year-old brother, Yousef, were abducted by their mother, Ghada Abdel Fattah Said, from their home in Euless, Texas. At the time of the abduction, Ghada had custody of her children, but by leaving with them, she violated the visitation rights of their father, Hirsham Almetnawy. A felony warrant was subsequently issued for Ghada on November 17, 1999.
Ghada, an Egyptian national, was 32 years old at the time of her children's disappearance. She is described as being 5'2" and weighing 115 pounds, with black hair and black eyes. The family was possibly traveling in a silver 1989 Honda CRX with the Texas license plate number YCJ05P. Authorities believed they might have traveled to New York, Tennessee, California, or Egypt. Iman was born in Burbank, California, and her brother Yousef was born in Bedford, Texas.
The case gained additional complexity due to its connection to Ghada's brother, Yaser Abdel Said. In 2008, Yaser was charged with the murder of his two teenage daughters in what were described as "honor killings" because they were becoming "too American." Photos of Ghada and her children were discovered in Yaser's residence, leading to speculation that they might have been on the run together. This connection raised concerns for the safety of Iman and Yousef.
After years of uncertainty, a significant development occurred in the case. In December 2016, it was reported that Iman and Yousef Almetnawy were found safe in Egypt.
