In the winter of 1985, a one-year-old boy named Nathan David Schlatter vanished from Tulsa, Oklahoma, under a cloud of troubling family circumstances. The exact date of his disappearance is unknown, but it is believed to have occurred in February of that year. At the time, Nathan, a little boy with red hair, was living with his parents, Terri Lea Schlatter and Darrell Schlatter. The family dynamic was far from stable; both parents were facing federal bank fraud charges. The situation grew more complex when Terri, after being located in Colorado and extradited back to Oklahoma, agreed to cooperate with authorities and testify against her husband. It was amidst this turmoil that the young boy was last seen. The events leading up to Nathan's disappearance paint a grim picture of a family in crisis. In January 1985, seeking to create a more stable environment for her son while she navigated her legal troubles, Terri had taken Nathan to stay with her mother and stepfather in Springville, Indiana. However, later that same month, after returning to Tulsa, Terri dropped Nathan off at a babysitter's for the day. It was then that Darrell arrived, informing the babysitter that her services were no longer needed. This would be the last confirmed sighting of young Nathan. Tragically, his mother, Terri, also disappeared around the same time and was never heard from again. Initially, due to the outstanding fraud charges against her, authorities considered Terri a fugitive rather than a missing person. Years passed without any sign of Nathan or his mother. The case took a darker turn in April 1993 when Darrell Schlatter was charged with the murder of a girlfriend who had died the previous year. This development prompted investigators to reopen the investigation into the disappearances of his wife and son. A local pond was drained in the search for clues, but the effort yielded nothing. Before he could be brought to justice for the murder charge, Darrell Schlatter took his own life by hanging himself in his jail cell in June 1993. In the many years since they vanished, neither Nathan's nor Terri's Social Security numbers have ever been used. The disappearance of Nathan David Schlatter, a toddler caught in the middle of his parents' tumultuous lives, remains an unsolved case with foul play strongly suspected.
