Sneha Ann Philip, a 31-year-old physician, was last seen on the evening of September 10, 2001, in lower Manhattan, New York. An internal medicine resident in her third year at St. Vincent's Hospital on Staten Island, Philip had the day off and went shopping. Security footage captured her at the Century 21 department store around 7:18 p.m., not far from her Battery Park apartment.
At the time of her last confirmed sighting, she was carrying two large shopping bags containing lingerie, shoes, and bed linens. There was no indication that she ever returned to her apartment, where she lived with her husband, Dr. Ron Lieberman.
Lieberman arrived home late that evening to find his wife absent. He initially assumed she was staying with her brother or a cousin, as she sometimes did when he worked late. He reported her missing the following day, September 11, 2001, a day of unprecedented chaos in New York City due to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, located very near their home. All of her relatives later confirmed they had not seen her. Philip's passport, identification, and all but one of her credit cards were left behind in her apartment.
The proximity of Philip's disappearance to the 9/11 attacks led to conflicting theories about her fate. Her family, particularly her husband, believes she was killed while trying to help victims at the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11th. This theory is supported by her medical training and her apartment's close proximity to the towers. However, an investigation by the New York City Police Department suggested that Philip may have disappeared voluntarily to escape personal problems. The police report pointed to alleged issues in her personal life, including potential alcohol abuse and legal troubles, which her family has denied.
Despite the lack of direct evidence placing her at the World Trade Center on 9/11, Philip's family persisted in their efforts to have her recognized as a victim of the attacks. In 2004, a lower court declared her legally dead but ruled there was insufficient evidence to link her death to the terrorist attacks. However, in a significant turn of events, a New York State appellate court overturned this decision in 2008, officially ruling that Sneha Ann Philip had died in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
