On a summer morning in 1983, John E. Warren, a 69-year-old retired engineering professor, left his home in Toms River, New Jersey, for his daily walk. He told his wife he was heading towards Ocean County College, a route he knew well, and that he would be back in about an hour. He was seen by a security guard on College Drive at 9:15 a.m. and later spoke with a jogger on Brokaw Boulevard around 9:50 a.m. However, he never returned home from his walk and has not been seen or heard from since.
His wife became concerned when he missed a neighbor's pool party scheduled for 10:00 a.m. and promptly reported him missing to the police at 11:00 a.m. Mr. Warren was a man of routine and his wife noted he would always call if he was going to be late. He was described as a very athletic man who had been a regular jogger for many years until arthritis in his hip forced him to switch to walking.
An extensive search was launched immediately following the report of his disappearance. The search involved local police, the Ocean County Sheriff's Department, and even helicopters from the Army National Guard and State Police, one of which was equipped with an infrared heat detector. Tracker dogs were brought in and were able to follow a scent believed to be his to a pond off Hooper Avenue, then along the edge of a wooded area and a roadway. Prior to his retirement two months before he vanished, Mr. Warren had been an associate professor of engineering at Ocean County College for 16 years. Before his career in academia, he had worked as an engineer for Nash Controls, where he designed machinery used in military weaponry.
