On what began as a day of recreation, Vincent Paul Petrilena, known to friends and family as Vinnie, vanished into the waters of Lake Mead. On May 23, 2004, the 46-year-old was on a houseboat near Grebe Bay, located on the Arizona side of the Virgin Basin of the lake, near Las Vegas, Nevada. Seeking to enjoy the water, he went down the boat's slide to go for a swim.
It was a simple, leisurely act that would soon turn into a desperate situation, forever altering the lives of those who knew him. The vastness of the lake and the clear day gave no indication of the tragedy that was about to unfold.
The weather on the lake took a sudden and dangerous turn as high winds began to sweep across the water's surface. These strong winds quickly pushed the houseboat away from where Vincent was swimming. He found himself struggling against the elements, unable to get back to the safety of the boat. In a courageous effort, another individual on the houseboat put on a life jacket and jumped into the turbulent water with a spare one, attempting to reach Vincent and help him. Tragically, the distance created by the wind was too great, and the would-be rescuer could not get to him in time. Vincent was last seen in the water, overcome by the conditions.
Since that harrowing day in 2004, Vincent Paul Petrilena has not been seen or heard from again. Extensive searches were conducted, but the area of Lake Mead where he disappeared is approximately 180 feet deep, complicating recovery efforts. Due to the circumstances and the failure to locate him, authorities have presumed that he drowned in the lake. His body, however, has never been recovered, leaving his loved ones without final closure. The case remains a poignant reminder of how quickly a day of leisure can turn tragic, leaving behind unanswered questions.
