In the autumn of 2022, Richard Shifflet, a 75-year-old resident of Dayton, Nevada, disappeared after leaving his home for a walk. Mr. Shifflet, who had a history of medical issues including dementia and previous strokes, was last seen at his residence on Andrea Way. When he did not return, he was reported missing to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office, prompting an immediate and extensive response. Recognizing the vulnerability of Mr.
Shifflet due to his health conditions, authorities classified him as a missing and endangered person. The initial search efforts included a Code Red activation for the Dayton area to alert the community of his disappearance.
The search for Richard Shifflet was a significant operation involving multiple agencies and advanced technology. The Lyon County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue team took the lead, conducting ground searches in the areas he was known to frequent. They were soon joined by the Washoe County Sheriff's Office's Regional Aviation Enforcement Unit, known as R.A.V.E.N., which provided crucial aerial support. The search utilized an infrared-equipped drone and the R.A.V.E.N. helicopter to scan the landscape, even during the night. Over the course of nearly three weeks, the collaborative effort expanded to include search and rescue units from Douglas County and Carson City, who assisted with ground searches and K9 units. Despite these exhaustive measures, which covered a five-mile radius from his home, there was no sign of Mr. Shifflet.
Tragically, the search came to a somber conclusion. Hikers discovered what appeared to be human skeletal remains in a remote area near U.S. Highway 50 and Baldwin Lane in Dayton. The Lyon County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the Nevada State Police Investigations Division, secured and processed the scene. The remains were then transported to the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner's Office for identification. Through DNA confirmation, the remains were positively identified as those of Richard Shifflet. While authorities have stated that no foul play is suspected, the official cause and manner of his death remain under investigation.
