Sylviane Finck-Lozada, a dedicated and beloved French and Spanish teacher originally from Belgium, was living in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, with her husband, Oscar A. Lozada, and their young daughter. For thirteen years, she had been a respected educator at Brusly High School, even earning a doctorate and national board certification. Behind the scenes of her professional success, her relationship with her husband was troubled. In the months leading up to her disappearance, police had been called to their home for domestic disputes. On one occasion, Sylviane reported that Oscar had thrown things at her, and another time she sought hospital treatment for an injury after he allegedly pushed her down. She expressed fear that if she pressed charges, her husband might take their daughter out of the country. The last time her family in Belgium, with whom she spoke daily, heard from her was on July 5, 2011. After that day, she was never heard from again. Concerns for Sylviane's welfare grew when her family in Belgium was unable to reach her, prompting them to report her missing on July 18, 2011. Investigators soon discovered that just days after Sylviane was last heard from, her husband Oscar had purchased multiple five-gallon buckets and bags of concrete mix. He and their four-year-old daughter then boarded a flight from Dallas to his native country of Venezuela on July 9. Back in Louisiana, investigators examining the couple’s home found physical evidence suggesting foul play, including Sylviane's blood in nine different areas of the garage. The suspicious purchases of the buckets and concrete, which were never found, combined with Oscar's abrupt departure to a country with no extradition treaty with the United States, created significant challenges for law enforcement. For years, Oscar remained a person of interest, living freely in Venezuela while Sylviane's family and friends were left without answers. A major breakthrough in the case came in September 2018, when Oscar Lozada was arrested in Mexico and deported to the United States to face charges in his wife's disappearance. After his arrest, he ultimately confessed to killing Sylviane. He admitted that during an argument where she threatened to leave him and return to Belgium with their daughter, he became enraged and strangled her to death in their bedroom. He then described the horrific act of dismembering her body in their garage, placing her remains in plastic bags inside five-gallon buckets filled with cement, and disposing of them in various bodies of water along Interstate 10. In February 2023, after a week-long trial, a jury found Oscar Lozada guilty of second-degree murder and obstruction of justice. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. This case is the tragic story of a respected teacher whose life was cut short by domestic violence. Though her husband was brought to justice, Sylviane Finck-Lozada's body has never been recovered, leaving her loved ones without a final resting place for her.
