The vehicle had been meticulously disassembled with a cutting torch. Suspicion quickly fell upon her ex-fiancé, Gerald Libertowski. The case against him intensified when a former business partner came forward, telling police that Libertowski had confessed to him about murdering Janeice. According to the business partner, Libertowski had a man dismantle the car, claiming he wanted it destroyed to avoid repossession by the finance company. The investigation further linked Libertowski to another missing person case, that of his more recent ex-girlfriend, Janis Sanders, who vanished in 1975. A search of Libertowski's home uncovered both a pill bottle prescribed to Janeice and the wallet belonging to Janis Sanders, hidden within a crawl space. Investigators also found traces of blood in a drain at the residence.
In 1976, Gerald Libertowski was charged with the murder of Janeice Langs and was also charged in connection with the disappearance of Janis Sanders.
