Norma Jo Crutchfield, a 41-year-old mother of two, vanished from Decatur, Illinois, leaving her family desperate for answers. She was last seen on October 31, 2020, when her mother dropped her off at the residence she shared with her boyfriend, Troy D. Slaw, in the 1100 block of East Olive Street. Concern for her well-being was high from the outset, as her family reported a history of severe domestic violence, stating that Slaw had brutally beaten her shortly before she went missing. After that assault, Crutchfield had sought refuge at her mother's home, and her disappearance occurred upon her return to the house she shared with Slaw. Her weekly visits to her mother ceased, and after three weeks of silence, she was reported missing. The investigation into her disappearance continued for over a year, with her family pleading for information and closure. A significant breakthrough occurred in May 2022, when authorities arrested Troy D. Slaw and an accomplice, Chase Freeman. Slaw faced charges of first-degree murder, while both men were charged with dismembering a human body and concealment of a homicidal death. The horrifying details of Norma's fate began to emerge through the confession of Chase Freeman. He informed investigators that in November 2020, Slaw had shown him Crutchfield's deceased body in a closet, admitting to having stabbed her to death. Freeman stated the body appeared to have been there for days. According to Freeman's account, Slaw offered him $200 to help dispose of the body. Freeman admitted to assisting Slaw in moving Norma's body to the bathroom, which had been lined with plastic, and stood guard while Slaw dismembered her. The two men then cleaned the scene and disposed of her remains in large garbage bags, which were taken to a dumpster. A search of the East Olive Street home by investigators uncovered bloodstains in multiple rooms that were later confirmed to be a DNA match for Norma Jo Crutchfield. In August 2024, Troy D. Slaw pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder and was sentenced to 28 years in prison. Chase Freeman also accepted a plea deal, receiving a four-year sentence. The case of Norma Jo Crutchfield is a tragic story of domestic violence that ended in her murder. Despite the convictions, her body has never been recovered, compounding the grief of her loved ones who believe her remains are likely lost in a landfill.
