On the morning of her 59th birthday, June 9, 1997, Bongak 'Jackie' Koja set out from her home on Mie Place in Oahu, Hawaii, for her customary pre-dawn walk. It was a routine she followed diligently, typically starting at 3:00 a.m. and covering a path to California Avenue, past Leilehua High School, and toward the Wahiawa Hongwanji Mission before heading back home.
