Her sister had just gone to get gasoline for the car, a short errand before they were to head out. When her sister returned, however, Shy’kemmia was gone. Initially, her family thought she might have caught a ride to the game with a friend or wandered off to a neighbor's house to play. But as the hours stretched on and there was still no sign of the little girl, a deep sense of unease settled over her family. Their concern grew into panic, and they contacted the authorities, only to be told, incorrectly, that they had to wait 24 hours to file a missing person report.
Shy’kemmia was a vibrant child, known for her outgoing personality and her love for skating and new clothes. She was also a child who faced significant health challenges. She suffered from severe asthma that required at-home breathing treatments and had been hospitalized for an attack just a week before she vanished. In addition to her asthma, she was born with an underdeveloped kidney, had bladder problems, and wore a leg brace for a displaced kneecap. On the day she disappeared, she was wearing a distinctive neon green Atlanta Braves jersey with red lettering, Levi's jeans, and white K-Swiss sneakers. Her shoulder-length black hair was braided into twirls, adorned with ten to twelve small gold beads in the front. These details, so vivid in the minds of her loved ones, became crucial markers in the desperate search that would follow.
The investigation into Shy’kemmia's disappearance began with a flurry of activity. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation joined local law enforcement, and together they conducted extensive searches by land and air.
