William Ronnie Staggs, 53, was last seen at his home on Fietzway Road in Dover, Florida, around 1:30 a.m. on February 6, 2007. He told his wife of 32 years that he heard a noise outside and went to investigate, taking a shovel with him. He never returned. His wife later found his house slippers, cigarettes, and eyeglasses in their yard.
Staggs was not immediately reported missing because he would sometimes leave home for short periods to stay with friends. However, he had never been gone for such an extended time. His family reported him missing on February 15, 2007. His loved ones do not believe he would have simply walked away, as he was very attached to the Dover area where he had lived his entire life. He had two children and was also a grandfather.
Prior to his disappearance, Staggs had been injured in a tree-trimming accident and was due to receive a $16,000 worker's compensation settlement. The money was with his lawyer at the time he went missing, and he had plans to use it to remodel his house. The timing of his disappearance, coinciding with the arrival of the settlement money, was noted by his family.
Staggs' family described him as a hardworking man who had been recently baptized. They also acknowledged that he sometimes used crack cocaine. Despite this, they do not believe he would have voluntarily left his family and home. The family offered a cash reward for information leading to his whereabouts, which was later increased to $20,000. His case remains unsolved.
